There's other 3d CAD programs, but I can't talk about many of them b/c I never used them. It has to do with how the software works and the work-flows involved with doing projects using the software. The way I look at it is, IV is for mechanical thinkers (categorical thinkers) and SW is for electrical thinkers (scatterbrains). The other problem is, learning style/thinking style. IV appeals to one kind of learning style, whereas SW appeals to another. The ratio of SW to IV is like 10:1 (or worse!). You don't want them cussing you out for not giving them tools that'll serve them in their adult years.įor example: Although I like inventor more than SolidWorks, I've experienced great difficulty finding jobs with companies who use Inventor. If you go with 3d CAD you will want to think about the future when the kids are looking for jobs. If you go with 2d CAD, you can get whatever fits your requirements.
